Message from the Office of the Chief of Police

The men and women of the Oswego Police Department proudly serve with empathy, professionalism, integrity, and courage each day. Our mission is to Serve and Protect with Dignity and Respect. We do this to ensure that residents and visitors of the Village of Oswego can safely pursue life, liberty, and happiness in all things.

Reflecting on Our Service: 2024 Year in Review

Leadership Development

In 2024, we expanded our leadership initiatives by creating a Field Training Program for Supervisors. The first officer to complete the program has since been promoted to Patrol Sergeant, an early success in strengthening our leadership pipeline.

Community Engagement

We continued to broaden our community policing efforts through positive public interactions and participation in local events. Work also began on establishing a Community Engagement Unit, which will officially launch in 2025 to further build relationships between officers and the community.

We extend our appreciation to our dedicated Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association and the Oswego Public Safety Cadet Unit #1833, whose volunteer efforts continue to support our mission.

Officer Wellness

Supporting the mental and physical well-being of our staff remained a top priority. In 2024, we introduced a Peer Support Program and implemented new fitness standards and testing to encourage overall health and resilience among our members.

Traffic Safety

Our commitment to safer roadways remained steadfast. Officers conducted 12,730 traffic stops, marking an 11% increase from the previous year. Enforcement of the “fatal four” traffic violations accounted for 53% of these stops.

While the Village continues to experience growing traffic volume and an associated rise in crashes, traffic enforcement will remain a core focus in 2025.

Crime and Calls for Service

The Village’s overall crime rate decreased by nearly 10% in 2024, with notable reductions in theft, fraud, and drug offenses.

Calls for service rose by 7%, reflecting Oswego’s ongoing growth and community involvement.

Training and Professional Development

Training is essential to delivering proficient, compassionate, and professional service.
In 2024, officers logged 9,096 training hours, a 2% increase from the previous year. We also launched Core Critical Task Training, a new in-house program designed to improve officer performance in high-risk, low-frequency situations.

Our Commitment

The Oswego Police Department remains proud to Serve and Protect the citizens of Oswego. We believe that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, and we are committed to earning public trust, upholding community values, and building meaningful partnerships.

“The Police are the Public, and the Public are the Police.”
