Short Term Rental License
Short-term rental properties found on such sites as Vrbo or AirBnB have become increasingly popular over the past decade. Before you consider listing your property on these sites, there are certain requirements you need to know.
DEFINITION
A short-term rental is defined as a single family or multi-family dwelling that is rented for a minimum of seven days and a maximum of 30 days. Short-term rental establishments do not include bed and breakfast establishments, motels, or hotels.
A Short Term Rental License is issued by the Village for the period of one year, from January 1 – December 31. You must renew the license each year. Each year, the owner/operator will be required to submit an application, undergo building and fire inspections, and pay the $2,000 license fee.
STEP 1: Special Use Permit Required
Before you can apply for a Short-Term Rental License, you will need to be approved by the Oswego Village Board for a Special Use Permit. The Special Use Permit process takes approximately 3 months and we cannot guarantee approval. In most cases, you will only need to obtain the Special Use Permit one time. Contact the Development Services Department for information: planning@oswegoil.org.
STEP 2: License Application
Once the Special Use Permit has been approved by the Village Board, complete and submit the Short Term Rental Application.
Please note: The owner/operator of a short-term rental must have a minimum of $1,000,000.00 in liability insurance which covers all short-term rental guests. You will need to submit proof of insurance with your application, and annually with renewal of your license.
STEP 3: Inspections
There are certain regulations and requirements that are required for a short-term rental, including:
- Compliance with the most current life safety codes, such as installation of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and posting exit floor plans in guest rooms
- Building and fire regulations
See Municipal Code for specific information on regulations and requirements
Please note: Annual inspections of the short-term rental will be made by Village Inspectors, and, if deemed necessary, by the Oswego Fire Protection District. Additional inspections can be required by the Village on an as needed basis.
STEP 4: Fee
The annual fee for a Short-Term Rental License is $2,000. The fee is non-refundable and will not be pro-rated regardless of when the application is made for the license.
