RPZ / Backflow Testing

The Village of Oswego contracts with Aqua Backflow to administer our Cross Connection Control (Backflow) Tracking Program. This program is mandated by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) to protect public health and Oswego’s water supply and distribution systems.

Backflow preventers are the property of the water customer, and the responsibility lies with the customer for annual testing and maintenance. Water customers must hire a licensed tester to perform the required annual tests. Most local plumbers are certified to test backflow preventers.  

All annual backflow test reports must be submitted electronically by the testing company via Aqua Backflow's tracking system (TrackMyBackflow.com).

Each resident / business who owns a backflow assembly (RPZ valve) will receive an annual notification letter from Aqua Backflow with instructions. Your cooperation in scheduling your annual backflow test is appreciated to keep our drinking water safe!

PROCESS FOR REMOVAL OF RESIDENTIAL LAWN SPRINKLER SYSTEM

Any residents wishing to permanently disconnect their lawn sprinkling systems need to:

1. Apply for a Building Permit
   • In the “Existing & New Structure Requests” box, check “Other” and fill in “permanently disconnect lawn sprinkling system” in line provided.
   • If using a plumber for removal, you will need to include the plumber’s 055 and 058 or Journeyman’s License, and a Letter of Intent with the application. 
2. Once the Building Permit has been issued and the $46.00 fee has been paid, you may have the disconnection work completed.
3. When the work has been completed, you must contact the Building & Permits Department (630-554-2310 or bzinfo@oswegoil.org) to schedule an inspection.
   • An inspector will verify that the backflow device has been taken out of service and that the water piping is terminated with not more than two feet of a dead end.
4. Once the inspection has passed, you must contact Aqua Backflow to notify them of the removal. PLEASE NOTE: If you do not schedule and/or pass the inspection, your name will not be removed from the RPZ list, and you will continue to be liable for the yearly inspection and fee.
