Curbside Composting

Groot Yard Waste Subscription Program

The Village of Oswego, in partnership with our contracted waste hauler, Groot, offers a way to compost right from the curb!

Residents who sign up for the Yard Waste Subscription Program can place both yward waste and food scrap compost ina 95-gallon cart for weekly collection.

As an alternative option to the sticker, the subscription program allows residents to place both yard waste and food scrap compost in a 95 gallon cart designated for weekly collection. This optional program is available at a rate of $120.00 per season, and helps residents reduce the amount of waste going to landfills.

You can toss both biodegradable food waste (fruit and vegetables) and yard waste in your Compost Cart.

The following items will not be accepted in your Compost Cart:

  • Glass
  • Styrofoam
  • Pet Litter
  • Grease/Oils
  • Seafood
  • Plastics
  • Diapers
  • Liquids
  • Meat/Poultry
  • Paper Products

To sign up, call Groot at 1-800-244-1977.

Compost at home

Residents are also encouraged to compost their food scraps in their backyards. Backyard composting is a completely free way to reduce landfill waste, and it also creates mulch for yards and gardens. Compost in your garden helps return nutrients into the soil for your plants and also reduces the amount of watering needed during dry spells.

Check with your homeowners association for rules and restrictions regarding backyard composting.

Getting started is easy. Check out this Composting Guide from the US EPA for helpful information, including what should and should not go into your compost pile.
