Oswego Police Headquarters officially earns LEED certification
The Oswego police headquarters has officially earned recognition for its energy efficient and environmentally conscious design with Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver Certification from the U.S. Building Council.
LEED is an internationally recognized green building certification system that provides third-party verification that a building or community was designed and built using strategies aimed at improving performance across all the metrics that matter most: energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emissions reduction, improved indoor environmental quality, and stewardship of resources and sensitivity to their impacts.
There are four levels of LEED certification – Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum – and the Oswego Police Headquarters is one of just 110 police facilities in the country to receive any form of LEED Certification.
The headquarters, which opened on Woolley Road in November 2018, was designed with several environmental considerations in mind. In the winter, the solar panel system on the building’s 65-foot tower heats the lobby with glycol fluid through radiant flooring to reduce fossil fuel heating. It also heats the building’s sidewalks, which reduces salt used to melt snow. Architecturally, large windows reduce electricity by lighting the building naturally during the day. The remaining lights in the building are LED-powered.
Native plantings around the building support pollinators and filter contaminants from nearby roads. An on-site training wing reduces driving to a range many miles away. And thoughtful use of durable materials inside the facility, such as tiled flooring and walls, protect the building from wear and tear and will reduce the need to replace materials years in the future.
“Our new headquarters has continued to prove itself to be very functional for our officers as they work to keep our community safe,” Police Chief Jeff Burgner said. “We’re proud to have a facility that serves our community well and contributes to our environmental sustainability. That’s both the environmentally and fiscally responsible thing to do.”
LEED Silver Certification adds to the list recognitions and accolades for the building and its project team. Other recognitions include:
- 2019 Project of the Year by the American Public Works Association, for the project’s construction management, safety, innovation and sustainability,
- 2019 American Institute of Architects – Justice Facilities Review Award for its form, functionality, and current architectural responses to complex justice design issues,
- Regional Best Project of 2019 by Engineering News Record, and
- 2019 Sustainability in Civil Engineering Achievement Award from the American Society of Civil Engineering Illinois Section, for the care taken to integrate the public safety campus into the community, use of sustainable products and design techniques, and the LEED Silver considerations.
“Sustainability and energy efficiency are good for our environment and are responsible for our budget,” Village President Troy Parlier said. “This facility will continue to serve the needs of our police department and the community for years and years to come.”
