Garbage & Recycling Information
All refuse, recycling and yard waste will be collected by Groot Industries. Materials should be placed at the curb prior to 6:00 a.m. on collection day. Garbage containers cannot be any larger than 35 gallons and cannot weigh more than 50 pounds. A 35 gallon, 65 gallon or 95 gallon wheeled garbage cart is available for rent or purchase through Groot Industries. Please do not place garbage in boxes.
Groot Industries will pick up an unlimited amount of household solid waste which must be placed in containers not to exceed 35 gallons or 50 pounds in weight and recyclables. Groot will allow residents the collection of one bulk item per resident per week at no cost. Bulk items are defined as large household items which one person can lift such as sofas, dressers, chairs, and tables. A mattress or box spring is considered 1 bulk item. Carpet needs to be rolled into 4’ long bundles and each bundle not weighing more than 50 pounds. Groot Industries will pick up 4 bundles per week.
Groot Industries will not pick up appliances or white goods. If a resident wishes, they may call Groot Industries at 630-892-9294 for this special pick up and a $38.63 fee will be charged per item. Residents must call and schedule a pick-up at least 24 hours in advance.
The only items needing stickers are the 30-gallon kraft yard waste bags and any bundled yard waste. The cost of a sticker is $2.25.
Paint cans are only accepted if empty or dry. Kitty litter or oil dry can be used to dry up unused paint.
Collection will not be provided on the following holidays:
- New Year's Day
- Memorial Day
- Independence Day
- Labor Day
- Thanksgiving Day
- Christmas Day
In the event that collection day falls on a holiday, collection will be provided one day later. This also applies for the rest of the days that week (if the holiday is on Tuesday, Monday’s collection will remain on Monday and then all the rest will be one day later).
If the holiday should fall on a Sunday, Monday will be a holiday for Groot with service delayed one day the remainder of the week.
Refuse, recycling and yard waste are collected by different trucks on different routes. If your home is missed, please contact Public Works at 630-554-3242 before noon the following day.

Yard Waste Subscription Program with Groot
As an alternative option to the sticker, the subscription program allows residents to place both yard waste and food scrap compost in a 95 gallon cart designated for weekly collection. In partnership with the Village of Oswego, the creation of the new program is aimed to help residents reduce the amount the amount of garbage being sent to area landfills. This optional program is available at a rate of $129.85 per season. Biodegradable food waste is permitted to be mixed with yard waste as part of this program that includes fruits and vegetables only.

Get electronics picked up from your home
The Village of Oswego’s waste hauler, Groot Industries, offers collection of some electronic waste directly from your home, often for no additional fee. Residents must call at least 24 hours in advance to schedule a pickup and make arrangements. Accepted items include:
- Computers and monitors
- Video game consoles
- Electronic mice
- Digital converter boxes
- Electronic keyboards
- Cable receivers
- Fax machines
- Satellite receivers
- Digital video disc players
- Portable digital music players

Please be aware that there may be a charge for items requiring more than a single person to lift. This charge is determined by Groot Industries.
Drop off electronics
The Oswego Area Chamber of Commerce offers electronics collection for the community at their offices, typically once a month on the last Thursday of the month. For upcoming dates and more information, visit the calendar on their website.
The Household Hazardous Waste facility in Naperville is open and available to all residents of Illinois. Household hazardous waste items are materials purchased for cleaning or maintaining a home. Business waste is not accepted.
Accepted Household Hazardous Waste Items
- Aerosol cans
- Automotive fluids (including oil, gasoline and anti-freeze)
- Asbestos materials (in a size that will fit in a 55-gallon drum and not in excess of 50 pounds)
- Batteries (including automotive, marine and sump pump)
- Fire extinguishers
- Fluorescent bulbs, CFLs (sealed, unbroken only)
- Household cleaners, drain openers and pool chemicals
- Paints and stains (oil-based only)
- Peanut oil
- Poison, pesticides and fertilizers
- Non-controlled prescription and over-the-counter medications
- Propane tanks (20 pounds)
- Solvents and strippers
- Unknown hazardous substances
The Household Hazardous Waste facility is located at 156 Fort Hill Drive, Naperville. It is open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, excluding holidays. Spring and Fall Cleanup Week
Spring Clean-up Week will be held June 8-12. Yard waste, which was already collected for free in May, will not be included in this free collection. Find details here. To get alerts for the updated collection dates, sign up for Email Alerts from the Village of Oswego.
Groot Industries provides a clean-up day in the spring and fall for Oswego residents. They will collect additional household waste, yard waste and bulk items for all Village residents, typically for one week in late April and one week in early November, on your normally scheduled garbage day, for free. No stickers are required during free cleanup weeks, however residents must still place yard waste in the 30-gallon kraft yard waste bags. Yard waste will not be accepted in plastic bags.
