Earth Day Recycling Extravaganza at Oswego Village Hall - April 21, 2018
The Village’s ECO Commission will hold an event on Saturday, April 21, 2018, in honor of Earth Day. The event will run from 9:00 a.m. to Noon at the Oswego Village Hall, 100 Parkers Mill, Oswego. The event will include demonstrations of beekeeping and honey, composting, rain barrels, and raising chickens. Fox Metro will be hosting a drop off for medical prescriptions and EpiPens. Eye glasses, keys, batteries, Styrofoam, bubble wrap, and packing materials may also be dropped off. There will be a book and bicycle exchange, and a collection of dog-related items for area rescue organizations. Groot Industries will be on hand collecting electronics of all kinds.
The Village of Oswego, in partnership with the Conservation Foundation, is selling rain barrels! Rain barrels are large containers that capture storm water from your roof that would otherwise be lost as runoff. Per the Conservation Foundation, approximately 40 percent of total household water use during the summer months is for watering lawns and gardens. Rainwater is a sustainable solution for watering flowers and gardens, or washing cars and windows.
Place your order before April 17, 2017. Rain barrels will cost $55-$60 and can be ordered through Upcycle Products. Choose to deliver the barrel to your home for an additional $5, or choose municipal pick up for no additional charge, to be picked up at the Earth Day event.
At the Earth Day event, in honor of Arbor Day, Village of Oswego Public Works staff will be planting two trees at the Oswego Village Hall. This will take place on Saturday, April 22nd at 10:00 a.m. If you would like to be a part of this annual event, please be at the Village Hall parking lot near the Gazebo by 10:00 a.m.
For more information about the Earth Day Event, please contact the ECO Commission at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Fox River Clean Up - August 4, 2018
The Village of Oswego’s ECO Commission is partnering with the Prairie State Canoeists and Water Trail Keepers to clean up the banks of the Fox River on Saturday, Aug. 4, and is seeking volunteers. Volunteers will help clean the banks of the Oswego and Montgomery riverfront, collecting trash from the river and shorelines, from Violet Patch Park to Hudson Crossing Park and including the confluence of Waubonsie Creek and the Fox River.
The ECO Commission will award a $25 price for the most unusual item retrieved from the river, and volunteers will get lunch, provided by the ECO Commission.
Volunteers will meet at 9 a.m. at Violet Patch Park then be assigned to teams to cover specific areas. Bring work gloves and wear mud boots, if possible. Lunch is served at noon at Hudson Crossing Park.
Volunteers must be 13 years old to participate in the land-based portion of the event. Ages 10 and up are welcome to participate in the land-based portion of the cleanup with an accompanying adult. Scouts and other community groups are encouraged to sign up.
Canoes and kayaks join in on the fun
In addition to the ECO Commission, the Prairie State Canoeists and the Water Trail Keepers will also contribute to the cleanup. Canoeists will lead the cleanup on the water using their own canoes, kayaks and tools, and there will be a car shift at 8:30 p.m. from Montgomery Park, located river right, downstream from the Montgomery Dam and upstream from the Mill Street bridge.
To volunteer on land, contact the Village of Oswego at 630-554-3242. To volunteer on water with your own kayak or canoe, visit prairiestatecanoeists.org. In the event that the Fox River is flooded and fast, 1,000 cu. ft. per second as measured at the Montgomery Dam gauge, the cleanup will be postponed to another date.
